Quarter Mark: State of the Giants

Well folks, here we are at the Quarter Pole of the 2006 season, so I thought I'd address the current state of the team. First of all, I'd like to appologize for the bullpen. Their performance has been unacceptable and disgraceful, and you can look forward to several experienced veterans being acquired to replace the inconsistent youngsters we've run out there. As for the starting pitching and hitting, I think that's been pretty damn good, don't you?

I know, .500 is not what we all were rooting for, but I want to remind you all that as long as we can stay in the race and get all our horses healthy, we'll be in a position for a strong stretch drive. And, as always, I am prepared to go out and get us that missing piece that will bring a long-awaited World Series Championship to San Francisco!

Now I know the idea of trading away more prospects may scare you, and that some of you already have your panties all in a twist over the Twins starting two of our former phenoms (Liriano and Bonser) this weekend against the Brewers. But I want to assure you that I have identified the crown jewels in our farm system, and I will NOT be trading them away this time. So let me make this crystal clear: Brian Cooper and Matt Kinney are not going anywhere. They are untouchable. Everyone else, however, will be on the block.

I also know from monitoring all the message boards that some you feel that I may have lost touch with the fan base and what they want. Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, sometimes, after games, I like to visit various local SF bars to take the temperature of the fans, see what they think of the team, kick their tires as it were.

My favorite place is this biker bar in the Castro called The Ramrod. The guys there are SO cool. They all dress in leather and chains and cool stuff like that. Some of them are really out there, too. Like this one guy who wears chains around his body attached to him with nipple clamps. Crazy, huh? And this other guy wears a pair of assless chaps and nothing else. Wild. It's kinda weird, though -- for bikers they don't seem to know that much about biking. I asked one guy what kind of motorcycle he rode, and he had no idea what I was talking about. Although, later, he did offer to give me a long ride on his hog. He said he could go all night if that's the way I liked it. Nice guy, huh? A little handsy, but nice nonetheless.

Anyway, I digress. My point is that I have my ear to the pavement, and am still very much in touch with the desires of the commoners -- you guys. So, have no worries, Giants fans, the organization is in good hands, and I believe special things are just around the corner.

Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,
Brian Sabean

Hi Brian! I guess now you know the real meaning of the term "five tool player", huh?

Brian,
This was premature.  The season isn't 1/4 over until half way through tonight's game and a lot can happen between now and then.  Thanks for the effort to reach out though.

I'll be damned if it doesn't seem like 332 lately. God bless that brain-dead hacker.

Re: Typo
He's not only leading the team in HRs and RBIs by far, but he's also only 11 points from the team lead in BA (among qualifiers). It's concievable he could be the club's triple crown leader at some point this weekend -- I wonder what kind of odds you could've gotten on that 3 weeks ago.

Feliz sucks. Feliz sucks. Feliz sucks.

Don't stop saying it, lest you jinx him.

Strikeouts are fascist.

Brian, I can't get over that you haven't responded to my personal profile.  I bared my soul, at least I felt so at the time.  But I'll be a man about it, although not in the same way as Vito in the Sopranos.

That's too bad because I make a mean stack of johnnycakes.

See, that's where we part ways.  (although Vito and Johnny did where some cool leather motorcycle stuff, like you were talking about before)

Amazing
I nearly pissed myself laughing. Though I have to admit I've never heard of the Ramrod. I definitely travel in far too vanilla circles.

Re: Quarter Mark: State of the Giants
Brian,
Thanks for the Quarter Pole Report. It's good to know that you still care about us little people.
Things with us are swell. Fan-favorite and all-around good guy Pedro Feliz has bounced back from a rough start and is now showing the patience and discipline he's been famous for. Mr. Bonds continues to lead the offense, as well as delighting schoolchildren and reporters everywhere. And Ray Durham's rugged durability and base-stealing acumen continues to invigorate the lineup. Please don't let these guys get away after this year. Would you consider long-term deals for each of them? Perhaps we could start a petition drive that would persuade you to keep them.
We do have a few small concerns. Steve Finley hasn't shown the HR power we were expecting - perhaps it's time to admit he just hasn't worked out. Matt Cain still hasn't hit 99 on the radar gun; soft-tossers like him are a dime a dozen. Well, $200,000 per, literally, but you get my meaning. Jason Schmidt has lost a couple of games already. Jose Vizcaino hasn't been given a resonable chance to show just what a good firstbaseman he can be. Matt Morris hasn't featured his amazing curveball nearly enough. And Jason Ellison is probably being overworked, and may burn out before August.
We think just correcting a few of the above concerns will go a long way toward maintaining the Giants' lofty position in the standings, as well as ensuring continued rabid fan support. Oh, and please don't be so patient with these young players - if they haven't impressed after a week or two, DFA 'em! Let somebody else give them a chance. Tough love, I always say.
Again, thanks for the insights, Mr. Sabean. And don't let your detractors get you down - stick to your guns, ignore the criticisms, and forge ahead. People who criticize are just jealous, anyway, and have no idea how to evaluate baseball talent.

Best wishes as always,

Ned Colletti, fan

Waiting for Travis, Nate, Marcus, and Nick P.
