Open Game Thread, 9/26

I'll miss Barry Bonds because I'll miss watching him play. I so, so, so won't miss talking about him, though. Wearing a Giants hat in another part of the country is a conversation-starter, but it's always a stupid conversation. Why do you root for Bonds? How can you root for Bonds? When would you stop rooting for Bonds? My answers, in order: Dunno, Eli Whitney, and I like banana cream pies. There's no sense in explaining it anymore.

But I do root for Bonds. When he hits a home run, I cheer. When he takes a walk to move a runner on first into scoring position, I appreciate just how unappreciated that is, and I cheer. Steroids? Wish he hadn't. It's a pretty distasteful situation. Yet the only reason he's the face of performance-enhancing drugs in baseball is because he's the best player involved, not because he's the player who was helped the most by the drugs. That makes hypocrites out of about 95% of the finger-waggers who continue to cheer their own team. Hate the sport, not the man...or plug your nose and dive in. Enjoy your '98 Series memories, Caminiti-lovers. Keep cuddlin' with that rally monkey, Glaus-apologists. Steroids can land you some sack-time with Madonna and a ring, kids; just ask the '89 A's.

Ah, but there's another reason to hate Bonds; he's almost certainly one of the biggest jerks in the jerk store. I generally ignore that part. All of the anecdotal evidence about autographs or recliners is something for the folks who watch baseball as if it were an extension of the E! channel. There are limits -- I'd never cheer for Rae Carruth or Michael Vick, for example -- but I'll do just fine using on-field results as the reason to cheer.

Then I hear Mike Krukow say Bonds was in street clothes while the Giants were trying to make a ninth-inning comeback. That decision affects the on-field results. That affects the people who drove up from Fresno to say goodbye. There's about a 2% chance that Barry's toe is so messed up, he couldn't risk limping out like Kirk Gibson because that would have jeopardized his chances of limping out like Kirk Gibson tonight. So there's about a 98% chance that Barry is just a total ass. We knew that already, but this is an ass move for the true connoisseurs of the Barry-is-an-ass storyline. It's just too perfect. Maybe I'm being unfair with my made-up percentages. Maybe he's just too emotionally drained to say goodbye on multiple occasions. I doubt it.

I'll still give him a standing ovation tonight. I'll wear my Barry fish shirt. I bought tickets just to watch his last game in San Francisco. And, damn, will I cheer. Maybe that does make me a sheep. I don't know anymore. Occam's razor -- all things being equal, the simplest solution tends to be the right one -- is useless right now. Dang it.

Maybe we'll all miss talking about Barry, too.

Re: Open Game Thread, 9/26
As a Dallas, TX transplant...I really hope that the rumors of the Rangers being frontrunners for him are true.  It's been weird not being able to pick up tickets and do the "we're not worthy" thing on a consistent basis.

I lost exactly 60% interest in the team after 756 (remaining 40% = 2/5 starts, lincecum & cain), because I was just so "over" all the hooplah and the coverage and blah blah blah.  That being said, aside from fellow Gaucho Michael Young...there's not a lot going on in the ballpark in Arlington.

"They can trade me," Bonds said. "I don't think they will, though. It's not like I want to be traded, man. I'm a Giant. I'm stuck here till the end."!

Don't know if anybody saw this piece when it came out last spring. But hidden away in there is a note that the Rangers were the "mystery team" bidding for Bonds service at the winter meetings last year.

I second everything you just said to hoping the Rangers get Bonds to only paying attention on lincecum & cain starts ... except I'm actually an Arlington (not Dallas) transplant.  If the Rangers get Bonds, that will triple the number of games I go to next year.

The fact that Bonds was in street clothes is unspeakably lame, but for some reason I can't bring myself to get that worked up over it. Maybe it's just because I didn't watch the game, I don't know.

I have no problem with Barry being in street clothes. He was fired by the San Francisco Giants, wasn't he?? How dare they think they can call on him in the ninth inning to bail them out. If I were him I would have told Bochy, "from one big headed freak to another, go fuck yourself."

Re: Open Game Thread, 9/26
I learned a long time ago that people can change their minds about stuff, but trying to change someone's mind about the Bonds stuff is as productive as poking a heated needle into your genitalia, and just as pleasant. It's one fight you cannot win regardless of the side you pick.

I'm with Grant. I'll miss watching Barry. I'll miss the chickens on the wall. I'll miss Atomic Dog blaring from the ballpark speakers as the place goes apeshit when Barry comes to bat. I won't miss the asinine treatment Giants news gets on various sports networks. I won't miss my jackass coworker spewing hateful repetetive BS about Bonds. I won't miss choosing to abstain from conversations on Bonds because I know I'll get lambasted for saying, "well you know, I sorta like the guy..."

I know Barry the man is leaving us, but the rest of him is staying for a long time. We're holding the bag. Hurrah.

Whether or not the inference of picking which side of your genitalia to pierce/stab was intended, this is easily my favorite extended analogy of the month.

Re: Open Game Thread, 9/26
I'll miss him too.  i'll especially miss the fact that he's the only one on this team who has any clue what it means to be a real hitter, power or otherwise.  I'll miss the excitement.  I'll miss that feeling you get when you just know he is going to hit a homerun.  I'll miss seeing him standing there right on top of the plate, bat wagging, and thinking "there's nowhere you can throw the ball that can get him out."  I'll miss seeing his smart play in the outfield, his routes to balls, his quick release (heck I've been missing most of that for about 5 years).  I'll miss the silly press conferences, the bipolar attitude, and the paula abdul get-up.  I'll miss watching the greatest player I have and most likely ever will get to see play in person.

And I'll miss the splash hits.

Poe and I were at the game last week and he said to me: "It took 8 years for the Giants to get 45 splash hits.  How many years until they double that, and hit another 45?"  I thought it might take 10-15 years.  He thinks it will take 30.  He might be right, and that's how amazing Bonds is.  I'll miss that.

2002? I'm over it. But I'll never be over Rich Aurilia.

Another reason - not a very practical one - not to sign Rodriguez...the comparison would just be ridiculous. Alex may hit as many home runs , but he's just not Barry.
2002 -3 , the hairs on the back of your neck stood up when he stepped into the box. The phone was ringing , the doorbell was ringing , the water was boiling over , the steak was burning , your girlfriend was saying "Let's go already!"....but you just...had...to watch. Because you knew , with an 99% rate of success , that he'd do something dynamic...and when he did you couldn't help but yell your frickin' head off.

My fiancee and I stayed at a cabin West Virginia for a long weekend. On our way back to DC we stopped at a farmers market and I bought some hot peppers (amazingly I bought two pounds for $1.50).

I swear this is related.

I had my Giants hat on and a guy selling me the peppers (in his late-teens or early 20s) started talking about Barry. I think he asked, "Are you excited?" I just sort of looked at him, shrugged, and gave him the money.

In the car I was yelled at for being surly. I had to explain that I just didn't have the energy. I didn't even care if this random guy was "pro-Barry" it just wasn't worth it.

I'll most fondly remember him wanting to wear #24A in honor of Willie.

I'm curious as to how the Giants handle his (lack of) presence at the park next year.

I just got back from an east coast trip* and Ripken's presence is still all over Camden Yards.  Of course, Cal retired and Bonds is likely to be playing for another team.

I'll get around to posting our RFK and Camden pics soon.

I'll miss the most potent swing in major baseball. Throwing a strike to Barry in a close game was like Joe Montana rearing back to pass in the closing minutes of football game. His off-field stunts are his own business, in my opinion, (I wrote him off as a "nice guy" when he first failed to show up for team photo day, oh, a decade ago). Now his quotes and antics are tabloid stuff. On the field, he was the best. I will miss him. I don't see any ballplayer on the horizon that can possibly replace him.

By the way, tonight's game could well be Omar Vizquel's last as a Giant, and near the last of his truly marvelous career. He deserves ovations too.

Re: Open Game Thread, 9/26
I won't pretend to know why Barry was in street clothes in the ninth of that game. I won't pretend to be naive about it, either, and it sucks, but at worst he's just saying f-you to BS, PM, and BBoch, and I take a kind of sweet pleasure in that.

Unfortunately, the FU extends to the fans there last night as well, and that sucks, but in what has become the biggest ego pissing contest between two people I've ever seen I just find it hard to get too worked up. As a fan, Barry's treated me more than well this excruciating season, with the exception of three or four nights. I'll give him the one, this time, to go with those others, as long as he makes it worth my damn while tonight. And even if he doesn't, I'll only be bitter for a while.

It's just another ugly finish to a great thing. Ugly and uglier. I wouldn't even be surprised if they didn't do much for him tonight. Some fireworks, and a few words from Renel, just so PM can say FU one last time. One day soon I'll be able to see all 15 years in context again. Last night, it sucked though. The whole thing puts a bad taste in my mouth.

Why Barry?
Joe Montana (with the help of Bill Walsh) changed San Francisco because we finally had a player we could trust with our hearts if it came down to him.  That is rare, rare talent.  Barry has come as close to achieving that as any player in baseball history.  How many game winning bombs has he hit?  How many game changing plays has he made?  He has earned the love.

Frankly, Barry holding all the HR records against the wishes of baseball and many fans is a good thing.  It proves that achievement still beats the wishes of money in this sport.  That's a good message for the kids.

As far as the doping goes, I'm with Grant.  I wish he didn't do it, but he doesn't deserve to be singled out.

Re: Open Game Thread, 9/26
In the last 14 years Bonds has given me more to cheer for than every other Giants player combined and doubled.  It has been an absolute pleasure to watch the best player of my generation dominate the game for my favorite team.  I don't really give a fuck if he wasn't available to pinch hit in a meaningless September game, I blame that on Sabean putting together this piece of shit team.

Thanks for the memories Barry!  I wish I could be there to help give the man a proper farewell.

Re: Open Game Thread, 9/26
I am a die hard Giants fan and also a big Barry Bonds supporter and am saddened that ESPN is not making tonights game a nationally televised game. I am down in Los Angeles for school and would really like to see Barry in his Home-Uni one last time. This guy has made so many good memories for me over the past 15ish years and I am not sure what watching baseball is going to be like without this guy on my team. Hell, I would plan bathroom breaks around his at-bats and feel very privileged to be able to tell my children one day that I got to watch one of the most electrifying players, not hitters, but players in all of sports. Those years from 2000 to 2004 were some of the most entertaining stuff i have ever seen and i will always be his fan because of them.

Sorry for the rant, but i just really would like to watch Barry depart from San Francisco from my own eyes and not from the perspective of a 15 second blurb on Sportscenter.

Lastly, this is what I hope Bonds decides to do in regards to playing next season. I think that he should really only consider playing for the Angels next year and if they don't offer him a contract he should just hang it up. Anaheim may be the only place where the fans may accept him and also provides a lineup that he could be used most properly by splitting time and DH duty with Garret Anderson in LF.

Thanks Barry for all the memories.

Re: Open Game Thread, 9/26
I'm totally with you. Except I'm at school in Virginia, and we don't get cable... or any TV, really. When I want to "watch" baseball, it's MLB Gameday, since I'm too cheap/poor/lazy to sign up for MLB radio. Which means that I won't get to see any of the game apart from the 15-second clips posted to sfgiants.com.

While I've been to quite a few games, I don't remember ever seeing Barry hit a home run (though I've been going since I was a kid, and Barry's been a Giant since I was 8). It's kind of sad to think that I won't get the chance. Either way, I'll always remember watching him play, and all those times he threw a guy out at home.

Barry, thanks for the ride, and best wishes.

Re: Open Game Thread, 9/26
Bonds has provided us so freakin' many awesome moments over the years, including the unanimous World Series MVP before defeat was snatched from the jaws of victory.  Hell, the actual World Series MVP wasn't as deserving as Bonds was!

Is he a d-bag in person?  Wouldn't know, I've never dealt with him.  I think the only people that should dislike him for being surly are the people he's been surly to, and he's NEVER been surly to me.  But I'll say this, I think the media is a hateful entity that truly holds more power to influence opinions, and the fact that the majority of "articles" anymore are opinion pieces is a load of horseshit.  Too much of what anyone writes is based around scandal or bad behavior or anything else they can use for shock value, so they can sell their crappy articles and/or rag.  The local media particularly should know better and understand that we'd like to hear a little more about our TEAM, not just Bonds.

And I too feel that IF he took any illegal substances (and no, I'm not saying he did or didn't, because I honestly don't know, regardless of how much the media wants to force down our throats that he most certainly did), it's too bad but it's really not anything new.  That doesn't make it okay, it just makes it nothing new.

Re: Open Game Thread, 9/26
I remember the first few times I saw Barry Bonds play for the Giants on TV.  I hadn't seen him much when he was with Pittsburgh, and I had this mental picture of a toolsy player who got by on superior athletic ability.  I was pleasantly shocked to find out he was, perhaps, the most disciplined, fundamentally sound hitter I'd ever seen.  I guess that's why I've never cared that much about the PED accusations.  The guy was the best hitter I've ever seen, with or without 'em.

The last few years starting with Kent's departure have been just excruciating.  First, all the pitching around him and then watching the hitters behind him flail away with runners on base.....just excruciating.  Later after the injury/infection.....holding my breath every time he went after a ball in the OF....just excruciating.

By the time the countdown to the record came along, it was a foregone conclusion.  No suspense except to see if he might have a career ending injury first.  I have to tell you I lost interest. Having to talk to all the Barry bashers...also excruciating.

Whatever the future holds, good or bad, it's way past time to move on.

Re: Open Game Thread, 9/26
the Giants were playing the Padres here in San Diego a couple years ago. I had just moved here. I think Petco Park had just opened as well. I was downtown at the mall, and stopped at Panda Express for some lunch. I was standing in line wearing all my giants gear. Hat, jersey, etc. My friend was also in his Giants hat and shirt.

we were about 4th or 5th in line, and i had my back to the line talking to my friend. i heard this voice. i got chills down my spine, but i couldnt pinpoint the voice, it took me a second. i realized who the voice belonged to when my friends face turned white, and his jaw dropped. i didnt need to turn around, because i already knew what i was going to see.

i could feel the sweat start to build up on my palms, and my body temperature began to rise. i wasnt this nervous when i had my first kiss. i attempted to remain calm and collected as i turned my head. my mouth was dry, and i have NO clue what my facial expression was. i wanted to hug him. i wanted to tell him about all the memories i now share with my father that almost never happened. instead i just tried my hardest to respect his space. he was with members of his family. when i turned to get a second glance, he nodded his head in acknowledgment. it was obvious, in my #25 jersey and my giants cap, that i knew who he was. he knew it, and i knew it.

as he walked out the door some people started yelling "barry, barry" (still not sure if they were pads fans mocking him, or supportive chants, or what) but he ignored them. i looked back at my friend. we didnt speak for a while. we were both in awe.

i have carried on a conversation with robin williams. i have talked about milk duds with clint eastwood. i waited on dustan hermanson, jay payton, ryan klesko and alex smith. i saw a movie with charles barkley sitting behind me. this list gets longer the more i think about it. what im trying to say is, ive been around celebrities before. this was different. the connection between barry bonds, and 15 years of giants memories, tangle with 15 years of family memories.

i was 13 when he came to the giants. i was beginning to become a rambunctious teenager. i got into a little bit of trouble. my dad didnt know how to connect with me. giants baseball, and barry bonds were the only things that kept me in line. kept me in touch with my dad. i am a million times closer with my dad today because of 1993, 1997, 1999, 2002, 2007. i dont care if barry is rude. i dont care if he is surly. i dont care if he used PEDs. he has been part of my life for 15 years. i love my father. thank you barry.

for those that missed this the other day.

http://baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=6744

The naked glee generated by this decision was embarrassing (links courtesy Buster Olney's ESPN.com blog), with the San Francisco writers falling all over themselves to praise McGowan for cutting loose the best player in franchise history, the most productive player on the current roster, the best hitter in the National League and, dollar for dollar, one of the better values in the game. The press pool showed no recognition that Bonds remains an amazing player and an asset to any team, even one far from contention. Yes, he requires special treatment; is it some kind of news to everyone that the very best people in any line of work tend to get perks that separate themselves from their peers?

Mark of Stupidity
By the by, an asterisk on the Bonds ball going to the HoF will make it a memorial to the presumptuous stupidity of the general public. It represents yet another stupid action based on speculation (see Iraq) and it is blatantly unfair to the individual (Bonds). Whether history proves the steroid assumption correct or not is beside the point. Right now, the asterisk speaks more to the public's unfairness than to Bonds' and baseball's misguided actions.

The marked ball will fit nicely into our history of social ignorance right beside the signs for segregated water fountains.

Re: Mark of Stupidity
""This ball wouldn't be coming to Cooperstown if Marc hadn't bought it from the fan who caught it and then let the fans have their say," Petroskey told The Associated Press. "We're delighted to have the ball. It's a historic piece of baseball history."

Hall of Fame officials and Ecko are discussing how to affix the asterisk on the ball. It's not yet known when the ball will go on display.

Ecko, known for his pop culture pranks, said he bought the ball and arranged to let the public decide its future online as a way to hold a conversation about a classic American sport in the digital world.

"This is obviously something that struck a chord with fans," Ecko said Wednesday in a phone interview with the AP."

Dale Petroskey is a former assistant press secretary  in the Reagen Administration. He supported voting in the wife of a white owner of a Negro League team into the HOF, but not Buck O'Neill.

He is the same HOF president that cancelled a HOF event to celebrate the 15th anniversary of Bull Durham, because he didn't like Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandons position on the Iraq War.

The HOF is run by a political hack, people. No surprise that a macho surly black man being ridiculed by a rich ass fashion queen would find an ally in the president of the HOF.

Always good to hear Peter Magowan and Company speak up. And people wonder why Bonds was in street clothes in the 8th inning?

Re: Open Game Thread, 9/26
I always enjoyed watching Bonds at the plate but he should be DH'ing or retired next year so the decision to let him go was the right one. The big black mark in my book was his willingness to let Greg Anderson sit in jail. There's some things true friends are willing to do for you that you just shouldn't accept. To be honest, I'd rather see Lewis hit a home run tonight than Bonds since that has more to do with the team's future. But I'd like to see Barry get a rousing send off.

He dude. I'll pay you 2million to do 2 years max in a minimum sec fed facility to keep me out of jail on a bullshit rap.

Just a different point of view man.

Re: Open Game Thread, 9/26
A different point of view that shows total contempt for the law. Lots of cons think the rap is bullshit and, surprise, it's against the law to pay someone to interfere with the investigation or prosecution of it. If Anderson insisted on not talking and Bonds decided afterward to try to get him back on his feet, that's generosity. But negotiating a get out of jail card that involves another man's freedom just because he happens to be rich, if that's what happened, is truly dispicable in my book.

Ewwwwwwwwwwww...  Why, Bochy?  Why???

Same ole veteran lineup, except Frandsen at 2nd...  What happened to Schierholtz, Ortmeier?  Did they "mysteriously" disappear on their way home one night?  Please, the only reason to pay any attention tonight is the man in left.(Which is very good btw, but I'd rather see the young'uns than these old farts.

you want to hear something funny?? Bruce Bochy actually thinks the veterans give him a better chance to beat the Padres tonight. Don't worry, he'll figure it out soon. Oh yeah, the season is over.

Re: Open Game Thread, 9/26
The really sad thing about this year might actually be how much I actually like the team. Bonds, Cain, Lincecum, Lowry, Hennessey, Wilson, Aurilia, Durham, Vizquel, Winn, Lewis, Davis, Cain, Bonds, Cain, Molina, Bonds, Cain.

I really, really like all of those guys, as players even. Man.

Re: Open Game Thread, 9/26
We drove out from Salinas to see him Friday night - I was sure he'd come out and pinch hit, but no luck.  At least he hung out in the dugout, and we had a great view.

It's a sad day, even though I agree it's time to let him go. When we moved from Southern Cal in 2000, we made it to Pac Bell Park that May, and Barry hit one into the arcade.  I was instantly hooked. I've been a Giants fans ever since (my grandmother must still be rolling in her grave, since I grew up rooting for 70s-era Dodger blue and 80s-era Angels). The first 4 years, 2000-2003, were simply amazing.  Barry and the Giants brought me back to baseball.

It does get hard defending him to the sheep-culture and their ignorance... and it's draining to watch the drama and fan hypocrisy that follows him on the road. I won't miss that, or having to read another smug East Coast media hit piece.

Despite all the personal crap he's brought on himself, I know I'll never see another player like him again. I hope he has a great night tonight.

Re: Open Game Thread, 9/26
I still remember the first time I saw Barry play for the Giants - it was a game at Shea Stadium in 1993. The 4th of July, if I remember right. He hit a homer, and the Giants won.

Really bummed I can't be there tonight. Whatever anyone might think about the man, it's the end of an era for sure. Bigger deal than when Will Clark or Matt Williams left, even - and unlike with those two, we know he's gone.

Re: Open Game Thread, 9/26
I tracked down the box score for the game:
http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/NYN/NYN199307040.shtml

I was wrong, though: Bonds was 0-4. It was Mike Benjamin and Mark Carreon who hit homer for the Giants. Funny how you remember these things the way you want to!

Re: Open Game Thread, 9/26
Oh, and I was going to say something like, "At least without Barry to kick around, the media might start paying attention to guy slike Cain, Lincecum, and Lowry" - but of course they won't. They'll just ignore us altogether, 'cause baseball played outside of New York and Boston doesn't count.

Re: Open Game Thread, 9/26
Bonds had an MRI this morning and was given the go-ahead to play "as long as he can withstand the pain."

Insert joke about what Giants fans need to withstand the pain here.
